What about Values and
Ethics?
Values are concerned with what is good and desirable, while ethics deal with what is right and correct.
This emphasizes that values has its commons and
differences.
Ethical Dilemma – is a situation where one must make a choice among two or more alternatives. A dilemma occurs when no one answer can conform to all the ethical principles involved.
Types of values:
we can speak of universal values, because ever since human beings have lived in community, they have had to establish principles to guide their behavior towards others.
In this sense, honesty, responsibility, truth, solidarity, cooperation, tolerance, respect and peace, among others, are considered universal values.
However, in order to understand them better, it is useful to classify values according to the following criteria:
• Personal values:
These are considered essential principles on which we build our life and guide us to relate with other people. They are usually a blend of family values and social-cultural values, together with our own individual ones, according to our experiences.
• Family values:
These are valued in a family and are considered either good or bad. These derive from the fundamental beliefs of the parents, who use them to educate their children. They are the basic principles and guidelines of our initial behavior in society, and are conveyed through our behaviors in the family, from the simplest to the most complex.
• Social-cultural values:
These are the prevailing values of our society, which change with time, and either coincide or not with our family or personal values. They constitute a complex mix of different values, and at times they contradict one another, or pose a dilemma.
For example, if work isn’t valued socially as a means of personal fulfillment, then the society is indirectly fostering “anti-values” like dishonesty, irresponsibility, or crime.
Another example of the dilemmas that social-cultural values may pose is when they promote the idea that “the end justifies the means”. With this as a pretext, terrorists and arbitrary rulers justify violence, intolerance, and lies while claiming that their true goal is peace.
• Material values:
These values allow us to survive, and are related to our basic needs as human beings, such as food and clothing and protection from the environment. They are fundamental needs, part of the complex web that is created between personal, family and social-cultural values. If exaggerated, material values can be in contradiction with spiritual values.
• Spiritual values:
They refer to the importance we give to non-material aspects in our lives. They are part of our human needs and allow us to feel fulfilled. They add meaning and foundation to our life, as do religious beliefs.
• Moral values:
The attitudes and behaviors that a society considers essential for coexistence, order, and general well being.
Why Ethics is important
We all have different views of the world
we live in. It is our view point that colours what we do and why we do it in a
particular way. But we must never forget that what we do will affect others in
ways that we cannot foresee. Nothing we do is in isolation – other people are
always involved in one way or another. What is the saying – ‘six degrees of
separation’? If you know six people you will have a link to everyone in the
world!! They will know six others that you do not know etc, so anything we do
or say may impact on someone we have never even heard of. It is therefore
important that we are very careful in what we do or say, for that very reason.
This means being ethical in our relationships with others. If we follow the six
degrees of separation to its logical conclusion, what we say or do will come
back to us in the end. What goes around comes around!
A World without Morals/Ethics
-The Society for Human Ethics and Moral-Consciousness, Inc (SHEM)
Imagine a world without ethics. Civil war reigns supreme. There is no law, no model of society, no higher learning, and no way of surviving but through brute force. It is, in fact, the law of the jungle the survival of the fittest. Society has broken down and technological advance has ceased. Science is a lost art and philosophy a thing of the past. We have reverted to an animal state.
The Importance of Ethics in Organizations
By Luanne Kelchner, Demand Media
Ethics
are the principles and values an individual uses to govern his activities and
decisions. In an organization, a code of ethics is a set of principles that
guide the organization in its programs, policies and decisions for the
business. The ethical philosophy an organization uses to conduct business can
affect the reputation, productivity and bottom line of the business.
Law vs. Ethics
We all know already that ethics is all
about the standards or codes of behavior expected of an individual by a group
.So, now what if law is implicated? Would ethics still be the ethics that you
know?
For example:
A father who don’t have
job already, his family don’t have food to eat on that day, even though it is
against his will he decided to do things which is against the law of our
constitution he decided to steal or even do hold-up or car-napped so that in
that way he will be able to feed his family and they will never be hungry at
all.
That situation shows that
not all ethical is legal. What the father did to fed his family is ethical but
in an illegal way or against the law.
IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS in business
Ethical behavior and corporate social
responsibility can bring significant benefits to a business. For example, they
may:
·
attract customers to
the firm's products, thereby boosting sales and profits
·
make employees want to
stay with the business, reduce labour turnover and therefore increase
productivity
·
attract more employees
wanting to work for the business, reduce recruitment costs and enable the
company to get the most talented employees
·
Attract investors and
keep the company's share price high, thereby protecting the business from
takeover.
Unethical behavior or
a lack of corporate social responsibility, by comparison, may damage a firm's
reputation and make it less appealing to stakeholders.
What is the Role of Ethics in Our Society?
--Halie
Boardman
As children, we were
taught by our parents that it is wrong to lie, cheat, and steal. As we grow up
and enter into the real world with some knowledge of right and wrong, we see,
first hand, the importance of ethics as well as its complexity. The role of
ethics in our society is very necessary because it has a large influence on
today, as well as the future. We need to learn about good ethics because they
guide our decisions, make us who we are, and determine our future.
Today's
society is full of crime, irresponsibility, and dishonesty...but imagines if
the entire population had no sense of ethics. The role of ethics in our society
is very important because it is the basic beliefs and standards that make
everything run smoothly. Ethics are involved in all organizations and
institutions around us whether it is political, medical, lawful, religious, or
social.

Ethics is important for us so, we should know when and how to apply it
in ourselves, in our society and everywhere. Ethics is a code of conduct for our relationships with all whom we
come in contact. Ethics encompasses social society, usually expressed
today as good manners; our behaviour towards our fellow humans and fellow
creatures; and trust. The world operates on trust. Trust is a belief that
others will act in accordance with ill defined, but generally accepted
standards of behavior and respect for others. If trust is absent then very
little of what we think necessary, to allow the free flow of social intercourse
and commerce, will occur. All these matters are governed by ethics.
Man is not good, we are not good (history proves
this solidly), and so man needs God and his method of good behavior. Without
God given ethics (the Holy Spirit), all you have are man's attempt to be good,
which ends in what we have today (total corruption) in corporations around the
world.
we don't need just ethics, but we need God's Holy Spirit living
on the inside of us to lead and guide us to do what is good and right, since
this cannot be found within man alone (without God).
THANK YOU SO MUCH *.*
